But the riff* takes place over 6 beats

To make the rhythm more Reggae like accent the chord in between the main beats.

The main beat is:

1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 but if we divide it in to:

1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +

Then place the chord sound on the "+" you will create a Reggae off beat feel.

Try this too: Count out loud 1 2 3 4 and then count out loud 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and.....
Place your chord on the "and" each time.
Try using upstrokes with the plectrum and cut the sound of the chord off.
